    Beneath the Skin of Sanity: A Psychoanalytic Study of the Cinematic Representation of Dissociative Identity Disorder in M. Night Shyamalan’s Split 2016

    The representation of mental illness in psychological horror films has become a vital subject in literary and cinematic studies, especially when it comes to films about Dissociative Identity Disorder (DID). Split offers one of the most controversial examples of this, focusing on Kevin Wendell Crumb and his different identities. This study analyzes the film’s depiction of fragmented identity, trauma, and psychological pain, while exploring the thin line between psychological realism and horror movie sensationalism. To do this, the research relies on psychoanalytic and trauma theories, while also bringing elements of film theory to break down the cinematic techniques used to show how the characters are built. This research employs a qualitative film analysis informed by psychoanalytic, trauma, and film theories to examine selected scenes, character alters, and cinematic techniques in Split, revealing how the film blends psychological realism with horror sensationalism.. The findings show how the film ends up reinforcing harmful stereotypes and moral panics about mental health by linking DID to violence and danger. Ultimately, the study concludes that Split gives us a deeply conflicted view of mental illness, trapped somewhere between genuine psychological depth and basic horror spectacle. أصبح تصوير الأمراض النفسية في أفلام الرعب النفسي موضوعًا بالغ الأهمية في الدراسات الأدبية والسينمائية، لا سيما فيما يتعلق بأفلام اضطراب الهوية الانفصامية. ويُعدّ فيلم "سبليت" أحد أكثر الأمثلة إثارةً للجدل في هذا الصدد، إذ يُركّز على شخصية كيفن ويندل كرامب وهوياته المتعددة. تُحلّل هذه الدراسة تصوير الفيلم للهوية المُجزّأة والصدمة والألم النفسي، مُستكشفةً الخط الفاصل بين الواقعية النفسية والإثارة المُبالغ فيها في أفلام الرعب. ولتحقيق ذلك، يعتمد البحث على نظريات التحليل النفسي والصدمة، مع الاستعانة أيضًا بعناصر من نظرية السينما لتحليل التقنيات السينمائية المُستخدمة في بناء الشخصيات. يستخدم هذا البحث تحليلًا نوعيًا للفيلم، مُستندًا إلى نظريات التحليل النفسي والصدمة والسينما، لدراسة مشاهد مُختارة، وشخصيات مُتعددة، وتقنيات سينمائية في فيلم "سبليت"، كاشفًا كيف يمزج الفيلم بين الواقعية النفسية والإثارة المُبالغ فيها في أفلام الرعب. تُظهر النتائج كيف يُساهم الفيلم في ترسيخ الصور النمطية الضارة والهلع الأخلاقي المُحيط بالصحة النفسية، من خلال ربط اضطراب الهوية الانفصامية بالعنف والخطر. في نهاية المطاف، خلصت الدراسة إلى أن فيلم "سبليت" يقدم لنا رؤية متضاربة للغاية للمرض العقلي، عالقة في مكان ما بين العمق النفسي الحقيقي ومشهد الرعب الأساسي. ا
