    Coexistence, Conflict, and Identity: Understanding the Political Effects of Israel's Establishment on the Relationship between Arab Jews and Arab Muslims in Iraq (1948-1951)

    Summary This research examines the historical transformation of Arab–Jewish relations in Iraq between 1948 and 1951, following the establishment of the State of Israel and the events of the Palestinian Nakba. It explores how Iraqi Jews—who were once fully integrated citizens—became targets of discrimination, suspicion, and forced migration. The study traces the shift in government policies, the role of Zionist propaganda, and the identity crisis faced by Iraqi Jews during this period.The research draws on historical documents, archival sources, and academic literature to understand how the rise of Israel influenced the perception of Jews in Iraq. It highlights that many Iraqi Jews opposed Zionism and remained loyal to their homeland, yet were pushed to emigrate due to fear, violence, and political pressure. The dissertation also shows that while the state turned against the Jewish community, many Iraqi Arabs defended their Jewish neighbours and rejected the idea that Zionism represents all Jews.By bringing together the themes of coexistence, conflict, and identity, this work fills a critical gap in the study of Arab Jews. It contributes to a more inclusive understanding of Middle Eastern history and challenges simplistic narratives about Jewish identity in the Arab world. الملخص يتناول هذه البحث التحول التاريخي في العلاقة بين العرب واليهود في العراق ما بين عامي 1948 و1951، في أعقاب إنشاء دولة إسرائيل وأحداث النكبة الفلسطينية. تستعرض الدراسة كيف تحوّل اليهود العراقيون، الذين كانوا في السابق مواطنين مندمجين بالكامل في المجتمع، إلى هدف للتمييز والشك والمضايقات، وصولًا إلى الهجرة القسرية. كما توثق التغييرات في سياسات الحكومة العراقية، ودور الدعاية الصهيونية، وأزمة الهوية التي واجهها اليهود العراقيون خلال تلك الفترة. تعتمد الدراسة على وثائق تاريخية ومصادر أرشيفية ومراجع أكاديمية لفهم كيف غيّر صعود إسرائيل نظرة المجتمع العراقي لليهود. وتُبرز أن العديد من اليهود العراقيين رفضوا الصهيونية، وظلّوا أوفياء لوطنهم، لكنهم اضطروا للهجرة نتيجة الخوف والضغوط السياسية والاعتداءات. كما يوضح البحث أن العلاقة بين العرب واليهود لم تكن عدائية بالكامل، حيث دافع كثير من العراقيين عن جيرانهم اليهود، ورفضوا الربط بين الدين اليهودي والصهيونية. من خلال الجمع بين التعايش والصراع والهوية، تسد هذه الدراسة فجوة مهمة في دراسة تاريخ اليهود العرب، وتساهم في بناء فهم أكثر شمولًا وإنصافًا لتاريخ الشرق الأوسط.
