The Architecture of Crisis: A Comparative Stylistic Analysis of Narrative and Thematic Construction in Hemingway’s “The Killers” and Faulkner’s “A Rose for Emily”
(University Centre Maghnia, 2026-07-01) Halima BENNACER
ABSTRACT This thesis contrasts Hemingway’s “The Killers” and Faulkner’s “A Rose for Emily” to demonstrate how narrative architecture generates thematic meaning. Examining the inciting incident and resolution through Leech and Short’s stylistics and Genette’s narratology, it investigates: how linguistic strategies diverge at these structural points, and how do those variances produce antithetical themes? Hemingway’s paratactic grammar, neutral dialogue, and straightforward timeline create existential paralysis and unfeeling destiny, compelling the reader to deduce meaning from what is omitted. Faulkner’s hypotactic structure, disrupted timeline, communal narrative voice, and macabre imagery represent psychological deterioration and a crushing past, are obliging the reader to reconstruct a shattered history. The study contends that style embodies theme: Hemingway’s minimalism enacts an existential reality; Faulkner’s maximalism acts out a historical pathology. This research advances comparative modernism and stylistic analysis.
