Abstract This study examines the themes of alienation and existential anxiety in the novel Death in Oran by Habib Sayah. It aims to explore how manifestations of alienation and existential anxiety are represented within the novel and to identify the role of the narrative structure in portraying this human experience. The study is guided by the following research question: How are alienation and existential anxiety manifested in the novel Death in Oran*, and what role does the narrative structure play in their representation?* The study seeks to highlight the various representations of alienation and existential anxiety in the novel, reveal the contribution of characters, language, and narrative space to the construction of its existential vision, and identify the main narrative techniques employed by the novelist to express the crisis of contemporary human existence. To achieve these objectives, the study adopts a descriptive-analytical approach, drawing on thematic criticism and narrative analysis tools. The analysis is based on Death in Oran as the primary corpus of the study. The findings reveal that alienation constitutes the central intellectual framework of the novel, appearing through the estrangement of the self from itself, from others, and from meaning. The study also shows that existential anxiety functions as the main driving force of the narrative experience, reflected in dominant feelings of loss, fear, loneliness, and the continuous search for meaning. Furthermore, the analysis demonstrates that the novel’s characters, language—with its vocabulary of death, questioning, and symbolism—and narrative space, with its open and closed dimensions, collectively contribute to portraying the existential crisis and enriching the intellectual and aesthetic vision of the text.
