Students’ Self-Confidence in Public Speaking Performance: A Case Study of First-Year LMD Students in the Department of English at the University Center of Maghnia.

Abstract

The current study aims to examine the role of students’ self-confidence in their public speaking performance within the Department of English at the University Centre of Maghnia during the academic year 2025-2026. First-year students encounter numerous obstacles to their oral performance, with a lack of confidence being a primary issue. This research employs a mixed-methods approach to analyze the relationship between two main variables: self-confidence (the independent variable) and public speaking performance (the dependent variable). To answer our research questions and test our hypotheses, two main data collection tools were used. The questionnaire was administered to first-year students, while the interview was addressed to oral expression teachers. The findings indicate that self-confidence influences students’ speaking performance. Furthermore, the study highlights the crucial role of teachers in developing self-confidence and improving students' speaking skills. الملخص تهدف الدراسة الحالية إلى بحث دور الثقة بالنفس لدى الطلاب في أدائهم في مجال التحدث أمام الجمهور، وذلك في قسم اللغة الإنجليزية بالمركز الجامعي في مغنية خلال العام الدراسي 2025-2026. يواجه طلاب السنة الأولى عقبات عديدة تعيق أداءهم الشفهي، وتُعد قلة الثقة بالنفس إحدى المشكلات الرئيسية في هذا الصدد. يعتمد هذا البحث منهجاً مختلطاً (يجمع بين الأساليب الكمية والنوعية) لتحليل العلاقة بين متغيرين رئيسيين: الثقة بالنفس (المتغير المستقل) والأداء في التحدث أمام الجمهور (المتغير التابع). وللإجابة عن أسئلة البحث واختبار فرضياته، استُخدمت أداتان رئيسيتان لجمع البيانات: الاستبيان الذي وُزِّع على طلاب السنة الأولى، والمقابلة التي أُجريت مع أساتذة مادة التعبير الشفهي. وتشير النتائج إلى أن الثقة بالنفس تؤثر في أداء الطلاب في التحدث؛ كما تبرز الدراسة الدور المحوري للمعلمين في تعزيز الثقة بالنفس وتحسين مهارات التحدث لدى الطلاب.
