Abstract
Abstract:
Large Language Model-based applications have become increasingly popular for supporting language practice, feedback and autonomous learning. This study investigates the oral fluency profile of intermediate English as a Foreign Language learners who demonstrate dependency on LLM tools. The underlying mechanisms linking patterns of LLM use to speaking fluency were explored from the perspectives of Cognitive Load Theory and Automaticity Theory. The study also explores how those learners critically perceive LLM use for English speaking practice. A mixed-methods design was employed, conducting a Likert scale questionnaire, a speaking task and semi-structured interviews with EFL learners in the University Centre of Maghnia. The findings reveal that intermediate EFL learners commonly exhibit moderate to high levels of dependency on LLM tools with a mean score of 40.7, integrating them into English learning and speaking practice. The results also indicate that learners encounter challenges in sustaining fluency despite adequate linguistic knowledge, as their speaking performance shows remarkable interruptions and reduced smoothness. Further insights are gained from qualitative findings, revealing that learners value LLM tools as supportive resources and practice partners, but they emphasize the importance of critical use. Therefore, these findings underscore the need for pedagogical frameworks that guide learners toward a strategic, balanced interaction with LLMs, ensuring that AI tools serve as cognitive scaffolds rather than crutches that hinder oral automaticity.
