The Spirit of Flapperism in F.Scott Fitzgerald’s Novel The Great Gatsby

Abstract

Summary The 1920s witnessed a turning point in American history characterised by a notable shift in Women’s presentation within the American society. Central to this evolution was the emergence of the Flappers which regarded as an emblem of modern feminity, autonomy and rebellion against conventional gender norms of earlier eras. This cultural evolution manifested during the Jazz age, a phase of prosperity, artistic innovations and redefinition of morality. In this vein, the current research work plans to provide in depth look into the literary portrayal of this cultural phenomenon through F.Scott Fitzgerald’s novel the great Gatsby. By analysing the novel through feminist theoretical lens, this study is conducted to reveal how the American novelist F.Scott Fitzgerald employed female characters including daisy Buchanan, Jordan baker and Myrtle Wilson to illustrate the complexities and contradictions of being a flapper including a male dominated society. To this end, the main findings proved that while the Flapperism expressed a new sense of independence and identity, it continued to function within a patriarchal structure, and presenting female characters as modern, and autonomous individuals revealing that real freedom compared to a mirage, and involving the impediments of social expectations, class mobility, and restricted male domination.
