Abstract This dissertation investigates how representations of motherhood and daughterhood figure in the work of Assia Djebar, with particular focus on Women of Algiers in Their Apartment, exploring their influence on women'sidentity in postcolonial Algeria. While women continue to berestrictedwithin the parameters set by a lingering French colonialism and patriarchy, this studyreads their history as the very history of all women, fundamentallysignificantbecause, althoughmarginalized, they have been denied a voiceworthy of recognition. Through memory and narrative, Djebar secures their presencewithin Algerian history and collective cultural identity. This research uses a qualitative interpretive approach to read and analyze the selectedtexts in terms of thematic, narrative, and symbolicforms. Drawing on a postcolonial feministtheoreticalframework, this study explores the ways in whichfemalecharacters move within the confines of traditional, often oppressive structures whilesimultaneously engaging in innovative and autonomousforms of expression. Furthermore, the spaces of maternalrelationships are foregrounded as sites where identity, memory, and resistance are fashioned, contested, and transmitted across generations of Algerian women. This study argues that Djebar's worksfunction as literary resistance. Through the recovery of women'svoices and their placement at the heart of her narratives, sheresists and challenges prevailing histories and dominant perspectives. Thus, this work foregroundsliterature'ssignificance in cultural memory and in understanding the roles of women in postcolonial societies.
