Abstract

Abstract This research explores the origins and development of the detective story by comparing Edgar Allan Poe’s The Murders in the Rue Morgue and Sir Arthur Conan Doyle’s The Mystery of the Boscombe Pool. The study argues that Poe, often regarded as the father of detective fiction, laid the foundational elements of the genre through his creation of C. Auguste Dupin and the use of rational analysis and deductive reasoning. In contrast, Conan Doyle refines and popularizes the genre through the character of Sherlock Holmes, who embodies and expands upon Poe’s methods. By analyzing narrative structure, characterization, and investigative techniques, this thesis highlights how Doyle imitates and builds on Poe’s literary model, transforming the detective story into a widely recognized and enduring form. The comparison illustrates both continuity and innovation within the genre, emphasizing Poe’s foundational role and Doyle’s significant contributions to its evolution.
