Silence, Memory, and Resistance: Representations of Motherhood, Daughterhood, and FemaleIdentity in Assia Djebar's Women of Algiers in Their Apartment
(University Centre Maghnia, 2026-06-03) AILAS KAWTHER
Abstract This dissertation investigates how representations of motherhood and daughterhood figure in the work of Assia Djebar, with particular focus on Women of Algiers in Their Apartment, exploring their influence on women'sidentity in postcolonial Algeria. While women continue to berestrictedwithin the parameters set by a lingering French colonialism and patriarchy, this studyreads their history as the very history of all women, fundamentallysignificantbecause, althoughmarginalized, they have been denied a voiceworthy of recognition. Through memory and narrative, Djebar secures their presencewithin Algerian history and collective cultural identity. This research uses a qualitative interpretive approach to read and analyze the selectedtexts in terms of thematic, narrative, and symbolicforms. Drawing on a postcolonial feministtheoreticalframework, this study explores the ways in whichfemalecharacters move within the confines of traditional, often oppressive structures whilesimultaneously engaging in innovative and autonomousforms of expression. Furthermore, the spaces of maternalrelationships are foregrounded as sites where identity, memory, and resistance are fashioned, contested, and transmitted across generations of Algerian women. This study argues that Djebar's worksfunction as literary resistance. Through the recovery of women'svoices and their placement at the heart of her narratives, sheresists and challenges prevailing histories and dominant perspectives. Thus, this work foregroundsliterature'ssignificance in cultural memory and in understanding the roles of women in postcolonial societies. Keywords: Assia Djebar; Women of Algiers in Their Apartment; postcolonial feminism; motherhood; daughterhood; identity; cultural memory; resistance.

From a Victim to an Avenger An Analytic Study of Heathcliff’s Personality throught Post Traumatic Stress Disorder Theory in Emily Bronte’s Wuthering Heights
(2025-06-18) Fatna Nedjwa HAMMADI; Souheyla BENMAGHNI
Abstract The intersection of literature and psychology offers a rich setting to study the emotional and mental issues of fictional characters via present-day theoretical models. In this vein, the current research aims to analyze the transformation of Heathcliff, a central character in Emily Brontë’s Wuthering Heights, from a victim to an avenger by looking at his psychosocial evolution through the lens of psychoanalytic literary theory and Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) theory. Set out to determine how traumatic events form Heathcliff’s identity, behavior, and relationships, also to explore how Brontë’s work is an early stage in the presentation of psychological pain in 19th-century literature. This study is based on psychoanalytic frameworks, which include Freud’s theories of trauma, and looks at a present-day clinical picture of Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder symptoms, specifically, through the use of theoretical analysis and close text study to track the signs of trauma, including re-experiencing, avoidance, negative cognition and mood, and hyperarousal in Heathcliff’s growth. Therefore, the researchers find that Heathcliff’s change from a neglected outcast to a revenger is a result of accumulated trauma, from his childhood to isolation trauma, and he also developed maladaptive coping mechanisms. To this end, this paper underscores the value of integrating psychological theories, particularly trauma studies, into literary criticism to uncover hidden dimensions of character construction and thematic development. Thus, this research study offers a richer, more empathetic understanding of Heathcliff’s character and deepens the appreciation of Brontë’s psychological realism by discussing the novel’s characters and themes.

Abstract Cultural criticism was able to be a space of overlapping and open work with many fields of human knowledge, which enabled the Frankfurt monetary community to invest its ideas and aspirations in the field of psychological criticism, because most of its pioneers were either psychoanalysts or knowledgeable about the field such as "Erich Fromm" and Marcuse... Some of them were professors in the field of philosophy and sociology, such as Horkheimer, who made cultural criticism an incubator interested in psycho-sociological phenomena, especially the question of identity and the issue of alienation; as they were preoccupied with life manifestations and all matters that touch human principles, they fought all forms of objectification and alienation to restore the individual his human identity In the shadow of capitalist instrumentalism. All these details represented a solid ground for us in our theoretical work, and since these psycho-sociological phenomena are amenable to analysis and study, in the second applied chapter we dropped them on the novel work, extracting various identity varieties and alienation styles that were buried in the hollow of the novel text, supporting all this with passages from the Approved Code of the study.

Abstract: The importance of this study, titled "representations of identity in the novel of a murderer who trains in Chicago," lies in revealing the dimensions of identity and its representations in the Algerian novel in general and contemporary in particular. Through the studied model, the novelist sought to establish a new narrative experience, so he was looking for forms through which he proved his identity, employing characters from the depth of reality, forming political and other social and cultural events. The novel was based on aesthetic and semantic techniques that created a poetic narrative language mixed with philosophical ideas that opens the way for interpretations and multiple readings.
