Item The Shifting Morality of Salvation: A Psychoanalytical, Ethical, and Reception Study of Eren Yeager in Attack on Titan(UNIVERSITY CENTRE OF MAGHNIA, 2026-06-22) Douaa BELGHERRI; Chaimae MEHIAOUIالملخص تجادل هذه الرسالة بأن تحوّل إيرين ييغر من بطل إلى شخصية مناهضة بطولية ترتكب الإبادة الجماعية في أنمي Attack on Titan يشكّل نقدًا للأيديولوجيات المطلقة التي تدّعي تحقيق الخلاص. ABSTRACT This thesis argues that Eren Yeager’s transformation from hero to genocidal antagonist in Attack on Titan critiques absolutist ideologies of salvation. Using psychoanalysis theory, ethical frameworks (utilitarianism, deontology, Levinas), and a viewer study of thirty Algerian students, the analysis shows that Eren’s actions stem from unresolved trauma rather than rational choice. No ethical system resolves the Rumbling cleanly: utilitarianism and deontology condemn it but fail in tragic dilemmas, while Levinasian ethics offers no solution when faces conflict. Survey data reveal that the majority of viewers find the Rumbling “understandable but not justifiable,” and empathy often decouples from moral approval. The thesis concludes that the series portrays genocide as a tragic consequence rather than a desirable outcome and forces audiences to accept that some moral dilemmas lack nontragic solutions. Attack on Titan thus demonstrates how popular culture can teach viewers to separate empathy from endorsement while staying vigilant against the monster within wounded hearts.
